Ayesha was reading aloud in class when she said "island" the wrong way, sounding out the s.

Someone in the back laughed. "It's silent," a voice said, loud enough for the class to hear.

Ayesha didn't turn around. She looked back at her page, said the word again, this time right, and kept reading.

By the time she reached the end of the paragraph, her voice hadn't changed. She read the rest the same way she always did.

Her teacher didn't stop to make a comment about the laugh. "Good, keep going," she said, and Ayesha did.

At recess, Ayesha played the same game she always played, with the same friends.
