Kofi completing a simple electrical circuit at a workbench as the bulb lights in his school workshop.
Facilitator Guide

Facilitator Guide

1

Before Reading

Say: “This is a story about a student solving a problem with a circuit. Listen for how he checks each part.”

2

Read Together

Pause after each short paragraph. Invite learners to predict what the character will do next.

Use the marked facilitator notes and natural pause point in the story below.

3

During Reading

After the light does not work:
Ask: “What should Kofi check first?”
After he finds the loose connection:
Ask: “Where was the problem?”
After the bulb glows:
Ask: “What did Kofi do before pressing the switch?”
4

After Reading

Ask: “Why did Kofi look at the circuit again after the bulb came on?”

5

Optional Activity

Human circuit: learners mime opening and closing a linked path to represent a broken and complete circuit. Everyone can say “Click” together before the bulb is revealed.

6

Teaching Focus

Kofi succeeds through disciplined attention. The solution comes from tracing the system carefully, not speed or luck.

Kofi’s class was preparing for morning assembly when their small demonstration light stopped working.

The bulb was not broken. The batteries were new. Still, nothing happened when the switch was pressed.

His classmates began putting away the wires.

“Wait,” Kofi said. “Let me trace the circuit once more.”

Facilitator note: Give Kofi’s “Wait” a calm, certain tone. He is thinking carefully, not trying to sound dramatic.

He started at the battery holder and followed the red wire with one finger. It reached the switch. The black wire ran from the switch toward the bulb.

Near the center of the board, one connection was loose.

Kofi pressed the wire firmly beneath the terminal and tightened it. Then he checked that the other connections were secure.

The room grew quiet.

“Try it now,” one classmate said.

Kofi placed his finger on the switch.

Click.

The bulb glowed.

Facilitator note: Pause after “Click.” Then read “The bulb glowed” clearly and let the result land before continuing.
Natural pause point

Everyone smiled, but Kofi looked at the circuit once more. He wanted to understand why it worked—not only celebrate that it worked.

“The path has to be complete,” he explained. “Electricity needs an unbroken circuit.”

The class carried the demonstration board to assembly. This time, when the switch was pressed, the light came on immediately.

Think About It

  • How did Kofi find the problem?
  • Why did the bulb light after he tightened the wire?
  • What kind of learner is Kofi?

Words to Discover

  • circuit — a complete path through which electricity can flow
  • connection — a place where two parts are joined
  • terminal — a point where a wire connects to electrical equipment
